How does diabetes cause neuropathy

Mismanaged diabetes causes neuropathy primarily through prolonged exposure to high blood sugar and high blood fats (triglycerides) .

Prolonged high blood glucose levels damage the tiny blood vessels that supply the nerves with oxygen and nutrients and triggers metabolic changes that disrupt nerve signaling, leading to nerve cell damage and death.

This nerve damage is driven by a combination of key factors:Damaged Blood Vessels (Neurovascular Damage):

Diabetes damages the delicate, tiny blood vessels (capillaries) called the vasa nervorum. Without a proper blood supply, nerves are starved of the vital oxygen and nutrients they need to survive and function correctly.

Toxic Byproducts:

High blood sugar forces excess glucose into alternative metabolic pathways. This creates toxic byproducts like sorbitol, which builds up inside nerve cells and causes them to swell and malfunction.

Sticky Sugars (AGEs):

Excess glucose binds to proteins in the body to form compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These “sticky sugars” weaken and damage nerve fibers over time.

Oxidative Stress & Inflammation:

Chronic high blood sugar produces highly reactive, damaging molecules called free radicals. This causes inflammation and oxidative stress, which further destroy nerve tissue. To protect your nerve health, managing your blood glucose is crucial. You can learn more about steps to delay or prevent nerve damage from the American Diabetes Association. If you are experiencing symptoms, explore diagnostic and treatment options detailed by the Mayo Clinic.
