Diabetes and fasting

Patients with diabetes mellitus (abnormal glucose levels), have a very important issue that they may have hypoglycaemia (low glucose level), that is an emergency condition and must be managed immediately in order to avoid any serious or permanent damage.

So, diabetic patients must have to be careful about any hypoglycaemic episode. What are general trends, that are observed among diabetic patients with respect to hypoglycaemia? It is a common observation that generally the hypoglycaemic episode occurs at a specific time, means if some one has faced an episode at 12 noon, it is observed he/she has the tendency of having same episode near 12 noon daily.

Its reason is that in the human body there is a biological clock, which produces similar conditions like hunger, sleep, etc at specific times. Similarly there are specific trends of a body to utilize energy reserves. So it makes the hypoglycaemic episodes at specific times.

Now the thing is that if you are having these episodes in the day times, you may have the episode during the fast, and if you experience such episodes at times other than fast timings, then it may be safer for you to fast ( but with the consultation of your nutritionist and concerned doctor).

Moreover, in regular days if you are facing the issue of hypoglycaemia, just learn to manage it. Consider if you have it at 4pm you would notice, it always occur at same time, now you have to make a routine of having a snack  about 1 or 2 hours before time as a preventive measure to avoid such episodes.

So, by managing your eating habits, and observing your body trends you can avoid episodes hypoglycaemia, that is very important because frequent episodes of hypoglycaemia or a prolonged episode of hypoglycaemia can damage brain permanently, and hence must be noticed, avoided and managed.
