Diarrhea is a serious issue
Diarrhea is defined as the passage of three or more loose stools in a day. It is important to understand that only loose stools does not always mean diarrhea, it becomes diarrhea, if there are more stools than 3 in a single day. Diarrhea may be of different types.
- Watery diarrhea: It involves stools with excess water. it causes loss of water and electrolytes.
- Fatty diarrhea: it involves loose, greasy, foul smelling stools.
- Inflammatory diarrhea: It may involve fever, pain or blood/pus excretion in stools.
- Bloody diarrhea: It may involve sever infection or inflammation.
- Functional diarrhea: It usually occurs with IBS(that is irritable bowel syndrome).
Moreover diarrhea may also interfere with body functions and conditions:
- Brain functioning: it may cause cognitive impairment, mental fogging, anxiety, or mood disorder etc
- Kidney: sever dehydration may cause kidney damage.
- Diabetes: Water loss by diarrhea can increase blood sugar levels.
- Liver: Diarrhea can significantly impact liver function, particularly in those with underlying liver disease.
- And much more
So diarrhea should be identified and treated at its early onset. Most common issue with diarrhea is dehydration and loss of electrolytes, which is managed by ORS, if patient can take it orally and not diabetic, if patient is unconcious IV infusion is required, which should be administered at hospital.
