What is cataract
In the human eye there is a little window (pupil), which allows the light to enter the eye in a controlled way. Behind the pupil there is a lens that focuses the light on retina (sensory part of eye). This lens makes a sharp image over retina whose signals are then sent to brain for perception. So, the working of lens is very important for proper image formation and vision.
But sometimes, it happens that this lens becomes foggy, so light passing through the pupil diffuses and the sharpness of image on retina is distorted causes blurred vision. Which may further proceed to complete blindness.
People with initial cataract should avoid driving at night, because opposite focused light produces strong irritating feel in their eyes, which may cause uncontrolled driving and accidents.
Main factors, that may cause cataract are:
- Aging: Cataract is very common in elderly patients.
- Medical issues: Certain medical issues like uncontrolled diabetes and obesity may play an important role.
- Lifestyle: smoking, alcohol consumption and inactive lifestyle may also play important role.
- Environmental factors: UV exposure is also important factor.
- Medication: long term steroid use may also be a cause.
For the treatment one should consult ophthalmologist (eye specialist), and ask for lens replacement eye surgery, that is usually a minor surgical procedure, may take few minutes.
